Are LED interlightings proven to work for high-wire cultivation?

A more even distribution of light over the crop.

The light level in a high-wire crop such as tomatoes rapidly decreases towards the bottom. When interlighting is used, light is brought to areas in the crop that aren’t getting enough light. In this way, lower leaves remain active and contribute to growth and production, and you can also work with a higher plant density.

Light fades out in the canopy. The LED interlighting compensates for this.

Photosynthesis occurs more on lower leaves.

Interlighting is effective in enhancing photosynthesis in the crop. When the leaves are interlighted, their photosynthesis capacity appears higher halfway through and at the bottom.

Lower leaves remain active and contribute to growth and production.

More interlighting increases fruit weight.

LED interlighting – with the same climate – results in a higher average fruit weight. Particularly during the lighting season. In April, when daylight becomes more powerful, interlighting has less impact on fruit weight.

Fruit weight increases when adding more light early in the year.

Higher winter production with earlier plant density.

Our research shows that increasing plant density earlier in the season, coupled with LED interlighting, produces more fruits per m2 and, consequently, more winter crops.
